PERFORMANCE AND COMPLAINTS
It is generally recognised that investigation for possible underperformance or having a complaint made against you and the ensuing follow-up, whatever your level of experience, is very stressful. Since this can make you feel very isolated and undermined, we feel that it is important that you know that you don’t have to do this on your own. A range of different types of help is available from the profession to support you as an individual through this challenging time.
There are two main areas of support that you can consider using, depending on your needs and circumstances:
Support with Contractual Issues
You can contact the LMC for confidential advice and support if you are having problems in relation to your GMS contract, matters relating to your practice, partnership difficulties, employment issues, or other professional issues. The LMC cam provide information, offer advice and ensure that correct procedures are followed. The LMC represents all GPs – independent contractors, employed GPs, sessional GPs and trainee GPs.
Support with Personal Issues
The Health for Health Professionals (HHP) Wales helpline is a face to face counselling service for all doctors in Wales. It provides doctors with access to a BACP (British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies) accredited therapist in their area. This service is confidential and fully funded by the Welsh Government. The service is currently administered by Cardiff University. If you wish to use this service call 0800 0582738 (Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm).
If you need to speak to someone out of hours, please phone the BMA Counselling Service on 08459 200169 or go to www.hhpwales.co.uk to find information on a comprehensive range of services that are available for all doctors across the UK. You do not have to be a member of the BMA to use its counselling service.
